                                    A Memory of Professor Henryk Kostyra

   The Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Division of Food Research mourns the loss of Professor Henryk Kostyra, Dr.SC, who passed away 31st December 2016.
   Born on November 10th, 1945 at Wolsztyn, he studied at the Chemistry Department of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, where he obtained a master degree in 1969. His scientific carrier was bound with the Department of Food Technology of the Academy of Agriculture and Technology in Olsztyn, today The University of Warmia and Mazury, and with the Polish Academy of Sciences in Olsztyn. On the January 14th 1994 he was appointed Full Professor in Agricultural Sciences. From 1995 to 2008 he was a Head of the Food Chemistry Department of the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of PAS in Olsztyn. The Institute has been subject to many administrative changes in which Professor Kostyra actively took part as a Scientific Director of the Institute in 1997-2004. Until his retirement, he was the Head of a newly created Department of Food Immunology and Microbiology.
   The main field of his research was food chemistry and biochemistry. He focused on food proteins hydrolysis and interactions with non-protein food compounds during technological processes, new products created then and characterization of their immune properties. These wide knowledge and scientific interests were acknowledged by his appointment to many scientific committees. He was a member of the Bureau of the Committee of Food Science Department V - Science, Agricultural, Forestry and Veterinary Sciences, PAS; member of the Bureau of the Committee of Food Science Department of the II - Science, Biological and Agricultural Sciences, PAS; member of the Bureau of the Committee of Biotechnology PAN; member of the Polish Biochemical Society. He also was laureate of Humboldt Fellowship Program in 2000-2002 in Institute of Food Chemistry of Technical University in Munich.
   From 2004, Professor Kostyra was Vice-Rector of the J. Rusiecki Higher School in Olsztyn (OSW). On the January 25 2006, he was appointed the Rector of OSW. At OSW, Professor Kostyra found another area of his scientific passion - development of cosmetology and physiotherapy sciences.
   The research work of Professor Henryk Kostyra was linked with highly qualified teaching. His lectures merged scientific passion with oratory abilities. He was a scientific mentor of many generations of masters, Ph.Ds, projects ideas and proposals and coworkers. He made nice story for auditory from difficult biochemistry or food chemistry area. He has this unique ability to prepare lectures for regular students, for Third Century University students and for primary schools students. Each lecture was professional and scientific. He felt responsible for the dissemination of knowledge within the scientific community the same as in the public area.
   Last but not least, in the years 1992-2011 Professor Kostyra had served as the Editor of Food Chemistry Section in Polish Journal of Food and Nutrition Sciences, published by the Institute, and then since 2012 became a member of Journal’s Honorary Patronage. His knowledge, expertise and engagement were invaluable to the Journal’s development.
   We will all remember Professor Kostyra as an enthusiastic, optimistic and warm person, having great passion for his work, devoted to his family, and in love with his beautiful garden.
